Bristol, England, 1950. Photographer, Teacher; studied Photography at the London College of Printing. He is a teacher at the School of Art & Media at the University of Plymouth, UK. The English rural landscape is at the genesis of his work; the large format photographs, with a great wealth of detail, explore the subtle or radical changes that occur in the landscape over time.
From all individual exhibitions, the following stand out: Jem Southam: British Landscape at Photoespaña, in Madrid (2010); Clouds Descending, at the Lowry Museum, Salford Quays, Manchester (2008); Upton Pyne, at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (2005); From A Distance: An Industrial Landscape at Tate St. Ives (2004). In addition to the United Kingdom and Spain, the exhibitions circulated in: Australia, Belgium, the United States of America and France. He has published the following books: Rockfalls and Ponds (2010); Clouds Descending (2008); The Painter's Pool (2007); Landscape Stories(2005); Shape of Time — Rockfalls, Rivermouths, Ponds (2000); The Raft of Carrots (1992); The Red River (1989). He is represented by the Robert Mann Gallery in New York and is present in the following collections: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Museum Folkswang, Dusseldorf, Germany; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK; Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, USA.
