Moving Image Practices

Participants in this course will develop an authorial moving-image project to be presented at an exhibition. We will work collectively, sharing work, ideas, doubts, references, while developing our personal projects. A general theme can be discussed to which each participant will respond.

The emphasis of this course will be in the creation and exploration of moving-image practices of an authorial, experimental nature, welcoming approaches to image, sound and montage/editing that enrich and assess the artistic projects of each of the participants. From the avant-garde pioneers like Maya Deren and Stan Brakhage or Jonas Mekas to contemporary artists’ films like Tacita Dean, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz or Sky Hopinka, a large array of film objects present, and work through, a similarly expansive group of concepts, aesthetics and critical methodologies.

The course will be divided in 3 main modules which will also aim respond to the specific projects in development by the participants:

Histories of film: through the viewing and analysis of films by different artists/filmmakers and readings, we will explore the different approaches to moving-image practices and technological mediums from a creative, historical and institutional point of view. Cinematic and para-cinematic works question and propose modes of engagement, narrative structure and methodologies of making that produce alternate networks of cinematic culture.

Invited artists: Some sessions (up to 4), will be given by invited artists who will share work and personal approaches to the creative process in open discussions.

Practical classes: These classes will be for the presentation of the works in development and working through technical issues in filming, sound recording and editing.

The last sessions of the course will be scheduled for the preparation of the exhibition/presentation of the finished projects.

Calendar:
The sessions will take place at Atelier de Lisboa every Thursday. Except during school holidays and public holidays, on the following days: May 1st, June 12th and 19th, July 24th to September 4th.
The last 4 sessions will be dedicated to the assembly and preparation of the exhibition and will be scheduled in order to optimize the process.

The group will have a maximum of 12 students.

Project Courses are most important to the School and the monthly fees include the use of Atelier de Lisboa resources. The monthly fees include, with no additional fares, access to: Black and White Dark Room, Digital Lab, Reading Room and Working Space.

Black and White Dark Room:
Atelier de Lisboa has a Black and White Dark Room, available to project students for the development of their works. Such usage has no additional fees and it may take place in accordance with the School's schedule (Monday to Wednesday, from 3pm to 10pm), upon booking. Film and photographic paper are to be acquired by each student.

Digital Lab:
Atelier de Lisboa has a Digital Lab, available to project students for the development of their works. Such usage has no additional fees and it may take place in accordance with the School's schedule (Monday to Wednesday, from 3pm to 10pm), upon booking. Printing papers are to be acquired by each student.

Reading Room:
Atelier de Lisboa's book collection is available for consultation and work by the project students, from Monday to Wednesday, from 3pm to 7pm. Between 7pm and 10pm, book consultations may not interfere with the ongoing classes.

Working Space:
Atelier de Lisboa's Working Space is available for students to work with no restrictions, from Monday to Wednesday, between 3pm and 7pm. Between 7pm and 10pm, the space's availability may be conditioned by the ongoing classes.
