Analog Photography and Darkroom

The Analog Photography and Black-and-White Darkroom Course aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and mastery of all stages of the analog black-and-white photography workflow.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to independently and competently perform all phases of the analog photography process, from selecting and acquiring the appropriate film to producing advanced prints on fiber-based paper.

The course is structured into two learning modes.
In each month there are two theoretical classes (classroom), and two pratical classes (darkroom)
Calendars are detailed below.
All classes, regardless of the weekday are held from 4:30pm to 6:30 pm.

Program:

Part 1 - The study of photographic film characteristics and its usage corresponds to the first part of the course.
- Characteristics of photographic film
- Types of film (black-and-white negative, color negative, color slide)
- Formats, brands, models, and places to purchase film
- Photosensitivity and photographic sensitivity (ISO)

Part 2 - In the next phase, we address the issues of film exposure in the camera.
- Handling and loading the film into the camera: precautions and best practices
- Standard exposure or adjusted exposure
- Exposure with sensitivities different from the nominal sensitivity
- The Reciprocity Law and compensations
- Filters

Part 3 – The third part of the course deals with film processing. Film processing is a complex and delicate task that must be carried out with the utmost precision to ensure consistent and suitable results for our objectives.
- The black-and-white darkroom and its fundamental characteristics
- Best practices in the darkroom (precautions)
- Equipment
- Phases of film processing
- Development parameters
- Non-standard development and development for films with adjusted exposure
- Creating a film archive

Part 4 - The fourth part of the course covers all aspects of photographic printing, from basic processes with resin-coated paper to advanced processes with fiber-based paper.
- Photographic emulsion
- Photographic paper
- Types of photographic paper (resin-coated (RC) and fiber-based (FB))
- Brands, models, and where to purchase
- Contact sheets
- The enlarger, timer, and other printing support equipment
- Contrast, contrast control, and contrast filters
- Basic printing on resin-coated paper (RC)
- Advanced printing on fiber-based paper (FB)
- Dodging and burning (localized exposure adjustment)
- Processing different types of paper
- Retouching prints
- Archiving and preserving prints

Class sizes are limited to 8 students to ensure personalized instruction. The course will run subject to a minimum enrolment of 6 participants.

Access to the Black & White Darkroom and the Digital Lab:

• One weekly lab session outside of class hours, subject to prior booking with the lab supervisor. Use of the laboratories more than once per week is subject to an additional fee.

• All printing paper for the Digital Lab and photographic paper for the Darkroom must be provided by the student.

• Whenever necessary, students may request assistance from the lab supervisor, who will provide basic guidance on the correct use of the equipment.
